Matthew Chapter 27: (Introduction to the Gospels, Coding Reference)

1Moreover {upon} early-in-the-day having become all the chief-priests and the-ones elder of the people took counsel against the Jesus, therefore to have put-to-death him. 2And they, having him bound, lead-forth {him}, and they handed-over ╓him╖ to ╓Pontius╖ Pilate, the sovereign. 3At-that-time a Judas, the-one handing-over him, having observed that he was deemed-guilty, having been regretted, ╓turned-away╖ ┌turned┐ the thirty silver-coins to the chief-priests and ╓the-ones╖ ┌{the-ones}┐ elder 4saying, “I, having handed-over innocent blood, failed!”

Moreover the-ones said, “Which will you observe towards us?”

5And he, having hurled the silver-coins ╓within╖ ┌into┐ the sanctuary, retreated, and he, having gone-forth, hung-himself.

6Moreover the chief-priests, having taken the silver-coins, say, “It-is-lawful not to have cast them into the treasury of the temple in Jerusalem, whereas it is a value of blood. 7Moreover they, having taken counsel, bought out-of them the field of the potter into a burial-place to the foreigners; 8on-which-account that, the field, a field of blood, was called until the-one today.

9At-that-time the-one having been said through a Jeremiah, the prophet, was fulfilled saying, “And they took the thirty silver-coins the value of the-one having had been honored which they honored from sons of a Israel, 10and they gave-freely them into the field of a potter just-as a lord ordained to me.”

11Moreover the Jesus ╓stood╖ ┌was stood┐ in-front-of the sovereign; and the sovereign interrogated him saying, “Are you the king of the-ones Israelite?”

Moreover Jesus was asserting to him, “Are you saying?” ‹a›

12And within the-one to be accused him from-under the chief-priests and the-ones elder he replied nothing. 13At-that-time the Pilate says to him, “Do you not hear {the-ones} how-great they are testifying-against you

14And he did not reply to him towards not-even one message, therefore to marvel the sovereign very-greatly.

15Moreover in-accordance-with a feast it was-customary {for} the sovereign to release to the crowd one captive whom they were desiring. 16Moreover at-that-time they were having a notorious captive being called‹b› a Barabbas.

17Then {upon} them having had been gathered the Pilate said to them, “Whom you desire, I will release to you, ╓a Barabbas╖ ┌Jesus, the Barabbas┐, or a Jesus, being called‹b› the one-anointed?” 18For he was knowing that because-of malice they handed-over him.

19Moverover {upon} him sitting upon the tribunal the woman of him sent-authoritatively {a message} towards him saying, “{Let there be} nothing with you and that-one, the-one righteous, for I suffered mightily today by‹c› a dream because-of him.”

20Moreover the chief-priests and the-ones elder persuaded the crowds so-that they might request-for-themselves the Barabbas, and they might destroy-utterly the Jesus.

21Moreover the sovereign, having replied, says to them, “Whom do you desire from the-ones two, will I release to you

      Moreover the-ones say, “╓a╖ ┌the┐ Barabbas!”

22The Pilate says to them, “Then which will I do {towards} a Jesus, being called‹b› the-one anointed?”

{The-ones} all say to him, “Let he be crucified!”

      23Moreover ╓the sovereign╖ ┌the-one┐ was asserting, “Which {the-one} pernicious did he do?”

Moreover the ones screamed remarkably saying, “Let he be crucified!”

24Moreover the Pilate, having observed that nothing is-of-benefit‹d› but more-exceedingly an uproar is becoming; he, having taken a water, washed-off the hands opposite the crowd saying, “I am innocent from the blood of this-one, ╓the-one righteous, ╖ you will observe!”

25And all the people, having replied, said, “The blood of him onto us and onto the children of us!”

26At-that-time he released the Barabbas to them; moreover he, having scourged the Jesus, handed-over {him} so-that he might be crucified.

27At-that-time the soldiers of the sovereign, having taken-along the Jesus into the praetorium, gathered the whole cohort onto him. 28And they, having stripped-off him{the clothing}, placed-around him a scarlet military-cloak, 29and they, having interlaced out-of thornbushes a wreath, inflicted‹e› {it} ╓onto╖ ┌upon┐ the head of him, and {they placed} a reed ╓onto╖ ┌within┐ the right-hand of him, and they, having fallen-on-knees in-front-of him, ╓were mocking╖ ┌mocked┐ him saying, “Hail you! The king of the-ones Israelite!” 30And they, having spat-upon into him, took the reed, and they beat into the head of him, 31and when they mocked him, and they stripped-off him the military cloak, and they clothed him in the outer-garments of him , and they led-forth him into the-one [place] to have crucified.

32Moreover they, having come-forth, found a person, a Cyrenian, a Simon with the name, they pressed-into-service this-one so-that he might lift-up the cross of him, 33and they, having come into a place being called‹b› a Golgatha which is being called‹b› a place of a skull, 34gave-freely him to drink ╓poor-wine╖ ┌wine┐ having had been mixed with gall, and he, having tasted, ╓was desiring╖ ┌desired┐ not to drink.

35Moreover they, having crucified him casting a lot, divided his outer-garments ┬so that it might be fulfilled the-one having been said from-under the prophet, “They divided the outer-garments of me to themselves, and they cast a lot upon the apparel of me┬.”

36And they, being-seated, were heeding him there; 37and they placed‹f› on-top the head of him the motive of him having had been written, “This-one is a Jesus, the king of the-ones Israelite.”

      38At-that-time two plunderers are crucified with him, one out-of {the-ones} on-the-right-hand and one out-of {the-ones} on-the-left-hand.

39Moreover the-ones, journeying-by inflecting the heads of them, were slandering him, 40and saying, “The-one demolishing the sanctuary, and building within three days! Rescue you yourself if you are a son of the god! ╓Descend you╖ ┌And descend you from the cross!”

41╓Moreover also╖ ┌Also┐ in-like-manner the chief-priests with the scribes and {the-ones} elder ╥and Pharisees╥, mocking, were saying, 42“He rescued {the-ones} other, he is-being-able not to have rescued himself mocking ╓if╖ he is a king of an Israel, let he descend now from the cross, and we will have complete-confidence-and-be-totally-entrusting ╓upon╖ ┌onto┐ him.”

43He had relied-on‹g› the god, let he set-free ╓him╖ now if he desires him for he said that I am a son of the god. 44Moreover the-same also the plunderers, the-ones, having been crucified together ╓with╖ ┌with‹h›┐ him, were reproaching ╔{towards}╗ him.

45Moreover from the sixth hour‹i› darkness became upon all the land until the ninth hour‹i›; 46Moreover around the ninth hour‹i› the Jesus bewailed with a great voice saying, “Eli, Eli lima sabachthani!” This is “A god of me, a god of me, to-what-end did you abandoned me?”

47Moreover some of the-ones, having had been standing there having heard, were saying that this-one is summoning an Elijah. 48And immediately one, having run out-of them, and he, having taken a sponge and having satiated with poor-wine, having been placed-around a reed, furnished-liquid him.

49Moreover the-ones, remaining, were saying, “Dismiss you! We might observe if an Elijah, will be rescuing‹j› him, comes!”

50Moreover Jesus again having screamed with a great voice, “He dismissed the spirit!”‹k›

51And lo the temple-veil of the sanctuary was split into {the-ones} two from top-until-bottom‹l›, and the land was shook, and the rocks were split, 52and the sepulchers were opened, and many bodies of the-ones sacred having had been fallen-asleep ╓are awakened╖ ┌were awakened┐, 53and they having come-forth out-of the sepulchers after the awakening of him, they entered into the sacred city, and they were became-visible to {the-ones} many.

54Moreover the centurion and the-ones with him, heeding Jesus, having observed the agitation and the-ones having become, they were exceedingly terrified saying, “In-reality this-one was a son of a god!”

55Moreover many women whosoever followed the Jesus from the Galilee to have served him were to have ascertained from at-a-distance; 56within who was a Mary, the-one Magdalene; a Mary, the mother of the James and a ╓Joses╖ ┌Joseph┐; and the mother of the sons of a Zebedee.

57Moreover {upon} evening having become a wealthy person of the name a Joseph came from an Arimathea, who also hewas┐ instructed {under} the Jesus; 58 this-one, having come-forward to the Pilate requested-for-himself the body of the Jesus; at-that-time the Pilate commanded to have given-forth ╓the body╖.

59And the Joseph, having taken the body, Joseph wrapped-up it ╓with╖ ┌within┐ a spotless fine-linen-cloth, 60and he placed it within the new sepulcher of him, which was hewn-out within the rock, and he, having rolled-up a great stone to the entry of the sepulcher, went-forth.

61Moreover there was a Mary, the one Magdalene; and the other Mary being-seated opposite the tomb.

62Moreover {upon} the-next-day whichsoever is after the preparation the chief-priests and the Pharisees gather towards a Pilate 63saying, “Sir, We remembered that that-one, the-one deceiving, said, ‘Yet living I am awakening after three days.’ 64Then command you to secure the tomb until the third day lest-perchance the adherents of him, having come ╓of a night╖, steal it; and they might say to the people he awaken from the-ones dead, and the last imposture will be worse than the-one first.”

65Moreover the Pilate was asserting to them, “You have a sentry, depart you! Secure you inasmuch-as you know!”

66Moreover the-ones, having proceeded, having sealed the stone with the sentry, secured the tomb.

_____

‹a›The Greek is λέγεις, legeis, which is 2nd person singular active indicative present meaning you say which may be translated either as: are you saying or you say {it} or you are saying {it}.

‹b›The Greek is λέγω, legō, meaning to say but the context here is to name which is commonly stated to call.

‹c›The Greek is κατά, kata meaning motion downward, the view is that the message comes down in the dream to a person which is more commonly spoken of by in English thus the use of by.

‹d›The Greek is ὠφελέω, ōpheleō, meaning help, aid, be of benefit, derive profit. The context is nothing is working and the crowd is starting to riot, thus the use of be of benefit.

‹e›The Greek is ἐπιτίθημι, epitithēmi, meaning place upon. The context is torture thus the use of its meaning to impose or inflict rather than the more sedate place upon. In addition the prefix is redundant with the following preposition, thus only one form is used.

‹f›The Greek is ἐπιτίθημι, epitithēmi, meaning place upon. The prefix of this verb is redundant with the adverb following so only one form is used.

‹g›The Greek is πείθω, peithō, meaning persuade, obey, rely on. The context is to rely on or trust in so the rely-on is used.

‹h›In the NA text this preposition is redundant with the verb and is included for completeness.

‹i›The Greek is ὥρα, hōra meaning any period of time, season, year, fitting time; thus contextually the hour, since a specific time within the day is mentioned.

‹j›The Greek verbal is future active participle for which there is no way to translate which does not appear either as a verb form or a present participle form.

‹k›This phrase could also be translated ‘the spirit dismissed’ since the neuter nominative and accusative forms are the same in Greek and spirit has the neuter gender. However since elsewhere Jesus said, “I lay down my life and I take it up again,” it is consistent with this to translate as rendered.

‹l›The Greek is ἄνωθεν ἕως κάτω, anōthen heōs katō meaning from above until downwards; thus top to bottom.
