Chapter 23: (Introduction to the Gospels, Coding Reference)

 

        1At that time the Jesus spoke to the crowds and to the adherents of him 2saying, “The scribes and the Pharisees sat down upon the chairs of a Moses, 3then {the ones} all as much as ╔if╗ they would say to you ╓to heed; heed you and do you╖ ┌do you and heed you┐, moreover do you not in accordance with the works of them for they are saying, and they are not doing, 4for they not only are fettering heavy to bear and intolerable loads, and they are placing‹a› onto the shoulders of the humanity, moreover ╓they╖ ┌they┐ are not desiring with the finger of them to have inflected them.

      5Moreover they are doing all the works of them towards the one to have been viewed to the humanity, moreover they widen the amulets‹b› of them, they enlarge the edge ╓of the outer garments‹c› of them╖, 6and they friendly love the first seat within the meal, and the first chair within the sacred assembly of the Israelites, 7and the salutations within the market-place and to be called from under the humanity, ‘My honorable sir! ╓My honorable sir! ╖’

      8Moreover you might not be called ‘My honorable sir!’ for one {beside} you is the ╓professor‹d›╖ ┌teacher┐, the one anointed; moreover you are all brothers.

      9And you might not call {one} a father of you upon the land for one is the father of you, the one ╓within the universes╖ ┌universal┐, 10nor might you be called professors‹d› ╓for one is the professor‹d› {beside} you╖ ┌because a professor‹d› {beside} you is one┐, the one anointed.

      11Moreover the one greater of you will be servant of you.

      12Moreover whosoever will lift high himself, he will be abased; and whosoever will abase himself will be lifted high.

      13Moreover Ah! Woe to you! Scribes and Pharisees! Expounders! ╓Because you forcibly appropriate‹e› the houses of widows; and {your} praying at great length {is} with pretense for this reason you will receive a more extraordinary condemnation.╖ ┌Because you close the dominion of universes in front of the humanity for you are not entering, neither do you permit‹f› the ones entering to have entered.┐

      ╓14Ah! Woe to you! Scribes and Pharisees! Expounders! Because you close the dominion of universes in front of the humanity for you are not entering, neither do you permit‹f› the ones entering to have entered.╖

        15Ah! Woe to you! Scribes and Pharisees! Expounders! Because you circulate the sea and the one withered to have made one proselyte, and whenever he becomes, you make him, a son of a valley of Hinnom, twofold more than you.

      16Ah! Woe to you! Blind guides, the ones saying, who would swear within the sanctuary, it is nothing; moreover who would swear within the gold of the sanctuary, he owes. 17{The ones} stupid and {the ones} blind! For which is greater the gold or the sanctuary, the one consecrating the gold?

      18And ╓if╖ who would swear within the altar, it is nothing; moreover who would swear within the offering, the one of his on top, he owes. 19{The ones} stupid and {the ones} blind! For which is greater the offering or the altar, the one consecrating the offering? 20Then the one, having sworn within the altar, swears within it and within all the ones on top it. 21And the one, having sworn within the sanctuary, swears within it and within the one ╓having inhabited╖ ┌inhabiting┐ it; 22and the one, having sworn within the universe, swears within the throne of the god and within the one being seated on top it.

      23Ah! Woe to you! Scribes and Pharisees! Expounders! Because you tithe the green mint and the dill and the cumin, and you dismiss the ones heavier to bear of the law: the judgment and the mercy and the complete confidence and total trust, ┌moreover┐ these it was necessary to have done, and those not to dismiss.

      24Blind guides, the ones filtering thoroughly the gnat, moreover gulping the camel.

      25Ah! Woe to you! Scribes and Pharisees! Expounders! Because you cleanse the one from-without of the drinking-cup and the small plate‹g›, moreover from-within they are sated from greediness and ╒self-indulgence╕ ╥wrongdoing╥. 26Blind Pharisee! Cleanse you first the one inside of the cup ╓and the small plate‹g› so that the one outside of ╓them╖ ┌it┐ might also become spotless.

      27Ah! Woe to you! Scribes and Pharisees! Expounders! Because you are analogous to tombs having had been plastered with lime whichsoever indeed are appeared from-without beautiful, moreover from-within they are sated of dead bones and of {the one}all foulness. 28Thus also from-without you, {the one} righteous, appear indeed to the humanity, moreover from-within you are replete of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

        29Ah! Woe to you! Scribes and Pharisees! Expounders! Because you build the tombs of the prophets, and you adorn the sepulchers of the ones righteous, 30and you say if we were within the days of the fathers of us, we would not be the partners ╓of them╖ within the blood of the prophets; 31therefore, you bear witness to yourselves‹h› that you are sons of the ones having murdered the prophets; 32and you have completed‹i› the measure of the fathers of you.

      33Serpents! Offspring of vipers! How are you fleeing from the judgment of the valley of Hinnom? 34For this reason lo I am sending authoritatively towards you prophets and {the ones} wise and scribes, ╓and╖ out of them {some} you will kill, and {some} you will crucify, and out of them {some} you will whip within your sacred assemblies, and {some} you will pursue from city into city. 35To the end that it might come onto you all the righteous blood being spilled out upon the land from the blood of an Abel, the one righteous, until the blood of a Zachariah, a son of a Barachiah whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar. 36Truly I say to you that it will have arrived all these onto this generation.

      37Jerusalem! Jerusalem! The one, killing the prophets, and {the one}, stoning the ones, having had been authoritatively sent towards her, how many times I desired to have assembled the children of you whom after the manner a bird assembles the chicks of ╓itself╖ ┌her┐ under the wings, and you desired not.

      38Lo, the uninhabited home of you is dismissed to you, 39for I say to you by no means might you observe me from just now until you would say, ‘Having had been praised, the one coming in a name of a lord!’ ”

‹a›The Greek is ἐπιτίθημι, epitithēmi, meaning place upon. The prefix of this verb is redundant with the following preposition, thus possibly indicating an emphasis, however in English only the preposition is used.

‹b›The Greek is φυλακτήριον, phylakērtion, meaning guarded post, fort, castle, safeguard, security, or amulet. For the Israelites these were small rolls of parchment with texts from the Mosaic Law written on them and bound to the forehead of a person while praying.

‹c›The Greek is κράσπεδον, kraspedon, meaning edge border, skirt and thus for the Israelites the fringe of the prayer shawl which would be an outer garment ἱμάτιον, imation. The ancient Greek has two words for the layers of clothing: the tunic, inner layer next to the skin like our under garments, and the outer garment for all layers over the tunic. The context in this verse is that the scribes and Pharisees where enlarging the edging so as to be more important.

‹d›The Greek is καθηγητής, kathēgētēs, meaning guide, teacher, professor. It is only used here and the term is more associated with the philosophical Greek schools so its meaning is much more akin to our college/university teachers which we call professors as distinguishing from other usages of the word teacher.

‹e›The Greek is κατεσθίω, katesthiō meaning to eat down, consume when applied contextually and figuratively it means to rob, take dishonestly, forcibly appropriate.

‹f›The Greek is ἀφίημι, aphiēmi, meaning properly to send from one’s self or dismiss, thus in this context dismissing the ones desiring to enter, or because of the negative nor the meaning is permit.

‹g›The Greek is παροψίς, paropsis, whose root is for eating dainties this usually is served on a small plate; it also may mean a plate for serving meat which could be a small plate as well for individual portions rather than a platter for serving a group.

‹h›The Greek is reflexive 3rd person plural, however contextually it is 2nd person plural thus that translation.

‹i›The Greek is πληρόω, plēroō meaning make full, complete, fulfill; and from context complete.
