Chapter 13: (Introduction to the Gospels, Coding Reference)

1Moreover before the feast of the Passover the Jesus knowing that the hour of him ╓has come╖ ┌came┐ so that he might transition out of this, the world-order, towards the father; he, having affectionately loved the ones his own, the ones within the world-order, affectionately loved them into a completion; 2and already {by reason of} the adversary having cast into the heart of Judas Iscariot of Simon {upon} the meal ╓having become╖ ┌becoming┐ so that he might hand him over. 3╓The╖ ┌a┐ Jesus, knowing that the father ╓has freely given╖ ┌freely gave┐ to him {the ones} all into the hands {of him}, and that he came forth from the god, is also departing towards the god.

4He is being arising out of the meal, and he removes‹a› the outer garments of him, and he, taking a drying cloth, girds around himself, 5accordingly he pours‹b› a water into the basin, and he began to wash the feet of the adherents of him and to dry {them} with the cloth which {the one}, having had been girded around, was. 6Then he comes towards Simon Peter, ╓and that one╖ ┌he┐ says to him, “Sir, are you washing the feet of me?”

7A Jesus replied, and he said to him, “What I am doing, you do not just now know; moreover you will know experientially after these.”

8A Peter says to him, “By no means might you wash the feet of me into the eon.”

╓The╖ ┌A┐ Jesus replied to him, “If I would not wash you, you are not having a share with me.”

9A Simon Peter says to him, “Sir, {wash you} not the feet of me only, but also the hands and the head.”

10The Jesus says to him, “The one, having had been bathed, has not a need ╓than╖ ┌except┐ the feet to have washed, but {the one} spotless is whole, and you are spotless, but NOT {the ones} all

11For he was knowing the one handing him over, for this reason he said ┌that┐, “You are NOT all spotless.”

12Then when he washed the feet of them, and he donned‹c› the outer garments of him and ╓he, having laid himself back again,╖ ┌and he laid himself back again, he┐ said to them, “You know experientially what I have done to you, 13you are summoning me, ‘the teacher, the master‹d›, and rightly you say for I am. 14Then if I, ‘the master‹d› and the teacher’, have washed the feet of you, you also are obliged‹e› to wash the feet of one another.” 15For I have freely given to you an illustration so that {which} I rightly did to you, also you may do. 16Truly, truly I say to you, the slave is not greater than the sir of him, nor the earthly messenger greater than the one having sent him. 17If you know these things, you are happy if you would do them.

18I say not concerning {the ones} all of you, I know ╓who╖ ┌who┐ I elected, but so that the writing may be fulfilled, “The one chewing the loaf of bread ╓with╖ ┌{with}┐ me aroused the heel of him onto me.” 19From just now I say to you, before the one to have become, so that when it might become, you may have complete confidence and be totally entrusting that I am. 20Truly, truly I say to you, ╓if would╖ ┌would┐ {be} the one, receiving anyone I will send; he receives me, moreover the one, receiving me, receives the one having sent me.”

21The Jesus, having said these, was troubled {within} the spirit, and he bore witness, and he said, “Truly, truly I say to you, one out of you will hand me over.”

22╓Then the╖ ┌The┐ adherents, being at a loss, were looking into one another concerning who he says. 23╓Moreover one, reclining at table, of╖ ┌One, reclining at table, out of┐ the adherents of him, was within the fold of Jesus, who Jesus was affectionately loving.

24Then Simon Peter beckons to this one to have inquired, “Who would it be‹f› concerning whom he says?”

25╓Moreover╖ ┌Then┐ that one, ╓leaning‹g›╖ ┌laying himself back upon┐ onto the breast of the Jesus, ┌thus┐ says to him, “Sir, who is {he}?”

26Jesus replies, “That one is who I ╓, having dipped a bite of bread will deliver.” And he, dipping in the bite of bread,╖ ┌will dip the bite of bread, and I will freely give to him.” Then he, having dipped the bite of bread, takes, and he┐ freely gives to Judas ╓Iscariot of Simon╖ ┌of Simon Iscariot┐.” 27And after the bite of bread at that time the adversary entered into that one, then Jesus says to him, “What you are doing, do you more quickly.” 28Moreover no one of the ones reclining at table knew experientially this, what he said to him. 29For some were thinking inasmuch as ╓the╖ ┌a┐ Judas was having the money-purse that the Jesus is saying to him, “Buy you what needs we are having into the feast or to the ones begging so that he might freely give something

30Then that one, receiving the bite of bread, went ╓immediately╖ ┌straightway┐ forth, moreover it was night. 31When he went forth, ╓the╖ ┌now a┐ Jesus says, “The son of the humanity was made renowned, and the god was made renowned within him. 32If the god was made renowned within him; and the god will make him renowned within ╓himself╖ ┌him┐; and straightway he will make him renowned.

33Children! Yet a little I am with you, you will seek me, and according as I said to the ones Israelite that where I am departing you are not being able to have come, and I say to you just now. 34I give you a new commandment so that you love affectionately one another according as I have loved you affectionately so that also you love affectionately one another 35Within this {the ones} all will know experientially that you are adherents to me if you would have affectionate love within one another.”

36A Simon Peter says to him, “Where are you departing?”

╓The╖ ┌A┐ Jesus replied to him, “Where I am departing, you are not being able to have followed me now; moreover you will follow ╓me╖ afterwards.

37The Peter says to him, “Wherefore am I not being able to follow you just now, I will place the physical life of me on behalf of you.

38╓The Jesus replied to him ╖ ┌A Jesus replies ┐, “Will you place the physical life of you on behalf of me? Truly, truly I say to you! By no means! A rooster ╓will╖ ┌may┐ crow‹h› until whichyou will deny utterly╖ ┌might you deny┐ me thrice.”

_____

‹a›The Greek is τίθημι, tithēmi meaning place, lay down, set, ordain; in this context Jesus places aside or removes the outer garments, thus remove.

‹b›The Greek is βάλλω, ballō meaning cast, place, hurl; in this context we think of pouring water from one source to another, so the use of pour.

‹c›The Greek is λαμβάνω, lambavō meaning take, receive; in this context Jesus takes or receives the outer garments, thus since previously removed, he would don or clothe with them again, thus donned.

‹d›The Greek is κύριος, kyrios meaning sir, master, lord; since the Greek does not distinguish the usage of lord when referring to the god and when referring to a human, I have kept lord for the Hebrew, god and have used sir as the title of respect as would be many renderings equivalent to our every day titles of address. However in this context master is a better rendering as it would be more equivalent to our usage for someone who is a recognized leader.

‹e›The Greek is ὀφείλω, opheilō meaning owe, be bound to render; be obliged; it behooves; in this context from what Jesus has done, a better render than owe is be obliged. When considering the culture of the time, a household servant would wash the feet of guests as a way of refreshing the person having walked the dirt roads. Thus Jesus is saying I showed you how to be a servant while also being the leading authority.

‹f›The Greek verb aspect is optative expressing the wish to know who in this context.

‹g›The Greek is ἐπιπίπτω, epipiptō meaning fall upon, assail, accumulate; in this context the person would lean.

‹h›The Greek is φωνέω, phōneō meaning produce a sound, summon; in this context the the sound of a rooster is crow.
