John Chapter 10: (Introduction to the Gospels, Coding Reference)

1“Truly, truly, I say to you, the-one, not entering through the entry into the roofless-enclosure‹a› of sheep‹b› but ascending from-another-place, that-one is a thief‹c› and a plunderer‹c›. 2Moreover the-one, entering through the entry is a shepherd of the sheep. 3The doorkeeper opens to this-one, and the sheep hear the voice of him; and he ╓calls╖ ┌summons┐ the sheep, his-own, by‹d› name, and he leads-forth them. 4╓And whenever the sheep╖ ┌Whenever the-ones all┐, his-own, might cast-forth, he is proceeding in-front-of them, and they follow him because they know the voice of him. 5Moreover by-no-means ╓might╖ ┌will┐ they follow {the-one} belonging-to-another but they will flee from him because they do not know the voice of the-ones belonging-to-another.”

6The Jesus said this, the allegory, to them; moreover those did not know-experientially whom it was which he was speaking to them. 7Then again the Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you that I am the entry of the sheep 8{The-ones} all as-many-as came ╒before me╕, are thieves and plunderers; but the sheep did not hear them. 9I am the entry; if- someone -would enter through me, he will be rescued; not-only will he enter but-also he will go-forth, and he will find a pasturage. 10The thief does not come except so-that he might steal, and he might slaughter‹e›, and he might destroy-utterly; I came so-that they may have a real-and-genuine-life, and they may have {it} extravagantly. 11I am the shepherd, the-one excellent; the shepherd, the-one excellent, places‹f› the physical-life of him on-behalf-of the sheep.

12╓Moreover the╖ ┌The┐ wage-earner, being also not a shepherd, whose the sheep are not his-own; he ascertains the wolf coming, and he dismisses the sheep, and he flees; and the wolf snatches them, and he scatters ╓the sheep╖. 13╓Moreover the wage-earner flees because╖ ┌Because┐ he is a wage-earner; and to him it-is-caring not concerning the sheep.

      14I am the shepherd, the-one excellent; and I know-experientially the-ones possessed-by-me, and ╓I, {myself} from-under the-ones possessed-by-me, know-experientially {them}╖ ┌they, the-ones possessed-by-me, know-experientially me┐. 15According-as the father knows-experientially me, and-I know-experientially the father; and I place‹f› the physical-life of me on-behalf-of the sheep.

16And I have other sheep which is not out-of this, the roofless-enclosure‹g›; it-is-needful-for me to lead also-those; and they will hear the voice of me, and ╓one flock, one shepherd will become╖ ┌one flock, one shepherd will become┐.

17For-this-reason the father loves-affectionately me because I place‹f› the physical-life of me so-that I take it again. 18No-one lifts-up it from the-one possessed-by-me, but I place‹f› it myself; I have the prerogative‹h› to have placed‹f› it, and I have the prerogative‹h› to have taken it again. I received this, the injunction, from the father of me.”

19Then again a cleft became within the-ones Israelites because-of these, the words. 20Moreover, {the-ones} many out-of them were saying, “He has an inferior-divine-being, and he rages. Why are you hearing him?”

21{The-ones} other were saying, “These, the speeches is not of {the-one} being-maniacal; an inferior-divine-being is-being-able not to open the eyes of {the-ones} blind.”

22╓Moreover╖ ┌At-that-time┐, the Feast-of-the-Dedication [modern Chanukah or Hanukkah] became within the Jerusalem, and it was winter‹i›. 23And Jesus was walking within the temple within the roofed-colonnade of a Solomon.

24Then the-ones Israelite surrounded him, and they were saying to him, “How-long are you lifting-up the heart‹j› of us? If you are the-one anointed, say you to us plainly.”

25The Jesus replied to them, “I said to you, and you are not having-complete-confidence-and-being-totally-entrusting. The works which I do in the name of the father of me, these is bearing-witness concerning me.” 26But you do not having-complete-confidence-and-being-totally-entrusting ╓for╖ ┌becauseyou are not out-of the sheep, the-ones possessed-by-me╓, according-as I said to you╖. 27The sheep, the-ones possessed-by-me, ╓hear╖ ┌hear┐ the voice of me, and-I know-experientially them, and they are following me. 28And-I am giving-freely to them a real-and-genuine-life lasting-for-an-eon, and by-no-means might they be destroyed-utterly into the eon, and someone will not snatch them from the hand of me. 29The father of me, ╓who╖ ┌which┐ has given-freely to me, is greater than {the-ones} all; and no-one is-being-able to snatch out-of the hand of the father ╓of me╖. 30I and the father, we are one

31╓Then the-ones╖ ┌The-ones┐ Israelite bore stones so-that they might fling-stones-at him. 32The Jesus replied to them, “Many excellent works displayed to you out-of the father ╓of me╖ because-of which a work of them, are you flinging-stones-at me?”

33The-one Israelites replied to him ╓saying╖, “Concerning an excellent work not are we flinging-stones-at you, but concerning defamation, and because you, a humanity being, are making yourself a god.”

34The Jesus replied to them, “Is it, having had been written, not in ┬a┬ ╔the╗ law of you; ┌thatI said, ‘You are gods.’? 35If it said those-ones, gods, towards whom the word of the god became, and the writing [law] is-being-able not to have been loosed, 36which the father consecrated, and he sent-authoritatively into the world-order, you are saying that you slander because I said, ‘I am a son of the god.’ 37If I am not doing the works of the father of me, have you-complete-confidence-and-be-totally-entrusting not {into} me. 38Moreover if I am doing {the works of the father of me}, even-if you may not have-complete-confidence-and-be-totally-entrusting {into} me, ╓have you-complete-confidence-and-be-totally-entrusting╖ ┌have you-complete-confidence-and-be-totally-entrusting┐ {within} the works so-that you might know-experientially and you ╓might have-complete-confidence-and-be-totally-entrusting╖ ┌may know-experientially┐ that the father {is} within me and-I {am} within ╓him╖ ┌the father┐.”

39Then they were again seeking to have detained him, and he went-forth out-of the hand of them. 40And again he went-forth across the Jordan-River into the place where a John, purifying, was the-one first, and he stayed there. 41And {the-ones} many came towards him, and they were saying that indeed a John did not-one sign, moreover all as-much-as a John said concerning this-one, it was truthful; 42and there {the-ones} many had-complete-confidence-and-were-totally-entrusting into him.

_____

‹a›The Greek is αὐλή, aulē meaning open court, courtyard, steading or a roofless enclosure or animals; other usages the meaning is courtyard as associated with a building for humans, but here the context is for animals so roofless enclosure.

‹b›The Greek is πρόβατον, probatov meaning properly any small four-footed, tame animal accustomed to graze, most commonly a sheep or goat. The nature of sheep is to be more docile and thus more easily led than goats or other small domesticated animals, thus many Christian Scripture theologians use sheep for followers of Christ. However this has the implication that these followers don’t or are not to think for themselves but to do whatever a leader says. Paul credits the Bereans Acts 17:10-12 to be thinkers and studiers of the Hebrew writings and not just doers of what he said.

‹c›The Greek is κλέπτής, kleptēs meaning one who takes by stealth, thus a thief,; and the Greek λῃστής, lēistēs meaning one who takes by plunder thus a plunderer. These have very distinct meanings in Greek culture; however the latter has been also translated a robber and thus the distinction is lost between the two words in English as robber is used for both terms.

‹d›The Greek is κατά, kata signifying direction downward which in this context in English the usage is by.

‹e›The Greek is θύω, thyō meaning to kill for sacrifices, immolate thus slaughter;

‹f›The Greek is τίθημι, tithēmi meaning put, place; set up; assign; establish; dispose; thus in this context of verses 11 and 15, Jesus is saying I place my life between the wolf and the sheep to fight the wolf and if necessary give my life for the sake of the sheep, not as the wage earner who flees verses12-13. In verses17-18 the contextual nuance changes in the Greek to I have the option by my choice to place aside or as more commonly translated lay aside.

‹g›The Greek is αὐλή, aulē meaning meaning open court, courtyard, steading or a roofless enclosure or animals; the context since sheep is mentioned roofless enclosure but this is metaphorical as the context is others not being Israelite or not this specifc Israelite group in Jerusalem which are to be part of the larger grouping.

‹h›The Greek is ἐξουσία, exousia for which there is no one good meaning here for the context is Jesus has all of at least these simultaneously: freedom, liberty, option, power, right, authority, choice and prerogative. The choice of prerogative tends to embody all of the rest.

‹i›The Greek is χειμών, cheimōn meaning stormy weather or winter which is a stormy season in the Middle East; also the Feast of Dedication occurs in the Northern Hemisphere during December, a winter month so winter is a better choice of words.

‹j›The Greek is ψυχή, psychē meaning soul is used here as the seat of human emotions, which in the case we use heart implying expectation.
