John Chapter 6: (Introduction to the Gospels, Coding Reference)

 

        1After these the Jesus went-forth {as-far-as} the Tiberias‹a› across the sea of the Galilee. 2╓And╖ ┌Moreover┐ a large crowd was following him because they were ╓observing╖ ┌ascertaining┐ the signs ╓of him╖ which he was doing upon the-ones ailing. 3Moreover ╓the╖ ┌a┐ Jesus went-up into the mountain, and he was-seated there with the adherents of him. 4Moreover the Passover, the feast of the-ones Israelite, was near. 5Then the Jesus, having aroused the eyes and having viewed that a large crowd is coming towards him, says towards ╓the╖ ┌a┐ Philip, “Whence might I buy loaves-of-bread so-that these might eat?”

        6Moreover he, contesting him, was saying for he knew which he was intending to do. 7A Philip replied to him, “Loaves-of-bread of two-hundred denarii‹b› are not sufficing-for them so-that each ╓of them╖ might receive a little something

      8An Andrew, one out-of the adherents of him, the brother of a Simon Peter, says to him, 9“A young child is here, ╓one which╖ ┌who┐ has five loaves-of-bread made-from-barley and two small-prepared-fish, but which is these into {the-ones} so-many

      10╓Moreover the╖ ┌The┐ Jesus said, “Make you the humanity to have laid-themselves-back.” Moreover, much grass was in the place; the men, ╓about╖ ┌nearly┐ five-thousand {upwards} the number, laid-themselves-back.

      11╓Moreover╖ ┌Then┐ the Jesus took the loves-of-bread; and he, having given-thanks, distributed ╓to the adherents and the adherents╖ to the-ones, having reclined-at-table; in-like-manner also out-of the small-prepared-fish; so-much-as they were desiring. 12Moreover as they had eaten-themselves full‹c›, he says to his adherents, gather the fragments, having abounded, so-that something may be not destroyed-utterly. 13Then, they gathered, and they stuffed‹d› twelve baskets of fragments from the five loaves-of-bread, the-ones made-of-barley, which with the-ones, having had consumed, abounded.

        14Then the humanity, having observed which a sign ╓the Jesus╖ ┌he┐ did, were saying “That this-one is in-reality the prophet, the-one coming into the world-order.”

      15Then a Jesus, having known-experientially that they are intending to come and to snatch him so-that they might make him king; he alone retreated ╒again╕ into the mountain.

      16Moreover inasmuch-as an evening became, the adherents of him descended onto the sea. 17And they, having embarked into ╓the╖ ┌a┐ fishing-boat, were going across the sea into a ╓Capernaum╖ ┌Capharnaum┐; and a blackness had already become; and the Jesus had ╓not╖ ┌not-yet┐ come towards them; 18which and {upon} a great wind, blowing the sea was being aroused. 19Then they, having had rowed nearly ┬twenty-five┬ ╔twenty five╗ or thirty stadia [approximately 2.8 – 3.4 miles], ascertain the Jesus, walking upon the sea and becoming near the fishing-boat; and they were terrified.

      20Moreover the-one says to them, “I am! Be you not terrified!”

      21Then they were desiring to receive him into the fishing-boat, and immediately the fishing-boat became upon the land into which they were departing. 22The-next-day the crowd, the-one having had stood across the sea, ╓having observed╖ ┌observed┐ that an other small-fishing boat was not there, except one ╓that-one into which the adherents of him embarked╖, and that the Jesus entered not with the adherents of him into the ╓small-fishing-boat╖ ┌fishing-boat┐, but the adherents alone of him went-forth. 23╓Moreother {the-ones} other╖ ┌{The-ones} other┐ small-fishing-boats came out-of Tiberias near the place where they ate the bread of the sir, having given-thanks. 24Then when the crowd observed that a Jesus is not there, not-even the adherents of him, they ┬also┬ embarked into ╓fishing-boats╖ ┌small-fishing-boats┐, and they, seeking the Jesus, came into a ╓Capernaum╖ ┌Capharnaum┐. 25And they, having found him across the sea, said to him, “Our-honorable-sir! At-what-time have you become here?”

        26The Jesus replied to them and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are not seeking me because you observed signs, but that you ate out-of the loaves-of-bread, and you were satisfied. 27Work you not {towards} the eating, the-one destroying-utterly, but {towards} the eating, the-one staying, into the real-and-genuine-life lasting-for-an-eon which the son of humanity will give-freely to you for the father, the god, sealed this.

        28Then they said towards him, “Which may we do so-that we may be working the works of the god?”

      29╓A╖ ┌The┐ Jesus replied, and he said to them, “This is the work of the god so-that you may have-complete-confidence-and-be-totally-entrusting into whom that-one sent-authoritatively.”

      30Then they said to him, “Then which a sign are you doing so-that we might observe, and we might have-complete-confidence-and-be-totally-entrusting you? Which may you work? 31The fathers of us ate the manna within the-one uninhabited according-as it, having had been written, is, ‘He gave-freely them to eat a loaf-of-bread out-of the universe.’ ”

      32Then Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you; a Moses has not given-freely to you‹e› the loaf-of-bread out-of the universe; but the father of me gives-freely you the loaf-of-bread, the-one true, out-of the universe. 33For the loaf-of-bread of the god is the-one descending out-of the universe and giving-freely a real-and-genuine-life to the world-order.”

      34Then they said towards him, “Sir, always give-freely you us this loaf-of-bread.”

      35╓Moreover╖ the Jesus said to them, “I am the loaf-of-bread of the real- and-genuine-life; the-one coming towards me by-no-means might hunger and the-one having-complete-confidence-and-be-totally-entrusting into me by-no-means ╓might thirst╖ ┌will thirst┐ ever-yet. 36But I said to you because not-only have you observed me, but-also you are not having complete-confidence-and-being-totally-entrusting. 37Which the father is giving-freely {the-one} all to me, he will have-arrived towards me; and by-no-means am I casting-forth outside the-one coming towards me. 38Because I have not descended ╓out-of╖ ┌from┐ the universe, so-that I do the will, the-one possessed-by-me, but the will of the-one having sent me. 39Moreover this is the will ╓of a father,╖ the-one having sent me, so-that {the-one} all, which he has given-freely to me, I will not destroy-utterly out-of him, but I will stand-up ╒it within╕ ╥him {within}╥ the last day. 40╓Moreover╖ ┌for┐ this is the will of ╓the-one having sent me╖ ┌the father of me┐ so-that {the-one} all ascertaining the son and having-complete-confidence-and-being-totally- entrusting into him may have a real-and-genuine-life lasting-for-an-eon, and I will stand-up him ╓{within}╖ ┌within┐ the last day.

      41Then the-ones Israelite were grumbling concerning him because he said, “I am the loaf-of-bread, the-one having descended out-of the universe.”

      42And they were saying, “Is not this-one a Jesus, the son of a Joseph, of whom we know the father and the mother? How ╓then╖ ┌now┐ is he saying this, ‘That I have descended out-of the universe?’ ”

      43╓Then the╖ ┌A┐ Jesus replied, and he said to them, “Grumble you not with one-another! 44No-one is-being-able to have come to me except- the father, the-one having sent me, -would attract him, and I will stand-up him ╒{within}╕ ╥within╥ the last day. 45It, having had been written within the prophets, is; and {the-ones} all instructed by ┬the┬ ╔a╗ god will be; ╓then╖ {the-one} all, the-one ╒having heard╕ ╥hearing╥ beside the father and having learned, comes towards me. 46Not that someone has observed the father, except the-one being beside the god; this-one has observed the father. 47Truly, truly, I say to you the-one, having-complete-confidence-and-totally-entrusting ╓into me╖ has a real-and-genuine-life lasting-for-an-eon. 48I am the loaf-of-bread of the real-and-genuine-life. 49The fathers of you ate the manna within the-one uninhabited, and they deceased. 50This is the bread, the-one descending out-of the universe, so-that someone might eat out-of it, and he might not decease. 51I am the loaf-of-bread, the-one living, the-one having descended out-of the universe; if- someone -would eat out-of this, the loaf-of-bread, he will live into the eon, and moreover the loaf-of-bread which I will give-freely is the flesh of me ╓which I will give-freely╖ on-behalf-of the real-and-genuine-life of the world-order.

      52Then the-ones Israelite were fighting towards one-another saying, “How is- this-one -being-able to have given the flesh ┌of him┐ to have eaten?”

        53Then the Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, except- you -would eat the flesh of the son of the humanity, and you may drink the blood of him, you do not have a real-and-genuine-life in yourselves‹f›. 54The-one, chewing the flesh of me and drinking the blood of me, has a real-and-genuine-life lasting-for-an-eon, ╓and I╖ ┌and-I┐ will stand-up him {within} the last day. 55For, the flesh of me is ╓in-reality╖ ┌real‹g›┐ eating, and the blood of me is ╓in-reality╖ ┌real‹g›┐ drink. 56The-one, chewing the flesh of me and drinking the blood of me, stays within me and I {stay} within him. 57According-as the living father sent-authoritatively me, and I am living because-of the father, and-that-one, chewing me, will also live because-of me 58This is the loaf-of-bread, the-one having descended out-of heaven, not according-as the fathers ╓of you╖ ate the ╓the manna╖, and they deceased; the-one chewing this loaf-of-bread will live into the eon.”

      59He, teaching within the sacred-assembly within ╓Capernaum╖ ┌Capharnaum┐, said these.

      60Then {the-ones} many out-of the adherents of him, having heard, said, “Troublesome-and-repulsive‹h› is this, the word, who is-being-able to hear it?”

      61Moreover the Jesus, knowing in himself, that the adherents of him are grumbling concerning this, he said to them, “Is this stumbling you? 62Then if- you -would ascertain the son of the humanity ascending {onto} the-one where he was formerly. 63The spirit is the-one reanimating, the flesh derives-profit not, nothing; the messages, which I ╓speak╖ ┌have spoken┐ to you; is a spirit; and a real-and-genuine-life is; 64but some out-of you are who are not having-complete-confidence-and-being-totally-entrusting.”

      Out-of a beginning the Jesus was knowing who are the-ones, not having-complete-confidence-and-being-totally-entrusting; and who is handing-over him. 65And for-this-reason he was saying “I have said to you that no-one is-being-able to have come towards me except- it, having had been given-freely him, -would be out-of the father of me.”

      66Out-of this {the-ones} many ╓of the adherents╖ of him went-forth ┌out-of the adherents┐ into the-ones back, and they were no-longer walking with him. 67Then the Jesus said to the-ones twelve, “Do you not also desire to depart?”

      68╓Then a╖ ┌A┐ Simon Peter replied to him, “Sir, towards whom will we go-forth? You have the messages of a real-and-genuine-life lasting-for-an-eon; 69and we have had-complete-confidence-and-have-been-totally-entrusting; and we have known-experientially that you are the-one ╓anointed, the son╖ ┌sacred┐ of the god, ╓the-one living╖.”

      70╒The Jesus╕ ╥He╥ replied to them, “Did I not elect you, the-ones twelve, and out-of you one is {the-one} slanderous.” 71┬He┬ ╔Moreover he╗ was saying the Judas ╓Iscariot╖ ┌of Simon Iscariot┐, being one out-of the twelve, for this-one was intending to hand-over him.

‹a›In chapter 5 Jesus seems to be in Jerusalem and thus the travel appears to be from there and he would not have to go across the sea to arrive at Tiberias which is on the southern edge of the sea of Galilee. The Greek texts have Tiberias in the genitive case without a preposition so there may be choices of prepositions depending on how one views the starting point for this chapter, and the adverb πέραν, perav meaning across, on the other side, over against, often is used with the genitive case. I have assumed a Jerusalem starting point. If starting from Galilee then crossing the sea makes sense as that is more direct than going by land.

‹b›The denarius, plural denarii is the Latin for the Greek δηνάριον, dēnarion, a unit of coin money whose values changed over time with the Roman emperors so a direct comparison to our ever changing money values is not possible. Some evaluations in the past were a day’s wages or the value of silver in the coin of about 20 cents at one point. In this passage 200 denarii represents a sizable amount of money but it was not going very far to feed 5000 men plus if any women or children were present.

‹c›The Greek is ἐμπίπλημι, empiplēmis meaning fill quite full, satiate, eat oneself full, in addition the Greek is aorist passive for which there is no good translation into English thus the rendering had eaten themselves full, keeping the coding for the passive voice.

‹d›The Greek is γεμίζω, gemizō meaning fill full of, stuff, gorge, When referring to waves of the sea and boats I use deluge; however for a basket more commonly in English one says stuffed thus that rendering here.

‹e›The context is that those living at the time of Jesus saw themselves as one with there forefathers and thus the word you is appropriate here and throughout this passage; however, we see ourselves as separate from our forefathers and would say them for you.

‹f›The Greek is reflexive 3rd person plural, however contextually it is 2nd person plural thus that translation.

‹g›The Greek is ἀληθής, alēthēs an adjective meaning unconcealed, real, truthful; although most usages is truthful here the context is real. The adverb is ἀληθῶς, alēthōs meaning in reality.

‹h›The Greek is σκληρός, sklēros meaning hard, harsh, austere, i.e. for words troublesome and repulsive, thus my choice of words. To understand this put yourself as to hearing these words for the first time, you know that you are not to eat the blood of any bird or animal without being cut-off from the people, Lev 7:26-27, Lev 17:10-14. Blood was the defining fact for life of humans, animals and birds. Here Jesus is totally contradicting everything in the Torah and even speaks of cannibalism as we understand it to mean eating humans, and Jesus was human in the eyes of the people. Thus the idea of eating Jesus, a human himself from these words, was utterly repulsive and troublesome.
